A Plastic-free Solution: Tru Earth Eco-friendly Laundry Detergent

Washing Machine

Following last week’s blog entry The Plastic Plague And How to Handle It , this week’s post is a product review of a plastic free, eco-friendly laundry detergent. Since the creation of Ad Vitam I have been in hot pursuit of plastic free, more sustainable alternatives for everything.

I came across a company called Tru Earth. They sell eco-friendly laundry detergent in form of sheets/strips. Each strip packs ultra-concentrated, hypoallergenic, eco-friendly cleaning power into a tiny, pre-measured strip of detergent that you just toss in the wash. Its low-sudsing formula works in all types of washing machines, including high-efficiency (HE).

The eco-friendly laundry detergent strips dissolve in the washing machine and are packaged in a cart box envelope, in which they are also shipped in. Tru Earth just sticks a shipping label at the back of the box. Waste kept at a minimum! I was impressed by when the detergent arrived in the mail, the box was small enough to fit into my mailbox, just a little bigger than a regular envelope. Also my laundry turned out just fine. I only tried the fresh linen scent, which didn’t necessarily remind me of fresh linen, it wasn’t very strong but still fine.

Tru Earth Eco-strips have the following certifications:

  • Paraben-free
  • Phosphate-free
  • Free of added dyes Free of chlorine bleach
  • Free of 1,4-dioxane, as certified by independent laboratory tests
  • Readily biodegradable in accordance with OECD 310D
  • Hypoallergenic, certified by independent dermatologists
  • Vegan: no animal-based ingredients or testing on animals by Tru Earth or the ingredient suppliers

Why does a product like this matter?

Over 30 billion of loads of laundry are done in North America each year, and the environmental impact is massive. A load’s worth of today’s leading detergent weighs in at over 40 grams. A single Tru Earth Eco-Strip weighs less than 3 grams, or a whopping 94% lighter! With so much less to truck around, and no plastic jug, Tru Earth Eco-Strips helps you lighten your load on the environment. If everyone switched to Tru Earth Eco-Strips, the annual eco-savings would be enormous: Eliminate one billion plastic jugs (you read that right!), saving 700 million from going to landfills.

I find Tru Earth eco-friendly laundry detergent strips to be a great alternative to laundry detergent plastic jugs. The price is $19.95 for 32 loads and $13.95 with a subscription, shipping is free. It might seem pricy but if I think of when I use regular liquid laundry detergent, it never lasts me for 24 or 32 loads. That probably means I am using too much. Looking at it that way, I am most likely ending up spending the same. With the strips, I don’t have to worry about measuring. It’s one or half a strip per load.
